Promise & Law Resources

Developing these Promise and Law resources was a part of my Olave Baden Powell Award, and the key reason for developing this website. I'm very thankful to all the units and leaders who helped out by testing the activities or lending me their Guides to test things on - these lovely people are acknowledged at the bottom of the page.

Activities are listed separately and have 3 types of tags to help you find what you are looking for.  Recuit/Guide tags indicate if the activity is suited to members who have recently joined or Guides who have already made their promise.  Age tags indicate the developmental stages I had in mind as suitable for the activity (including OP standing for lave Program).  And finally Individual/Patrol/Unit tags indicate the size group that the activity can work with.  Click on the tags to filter activities.

Use My Time and Abilities Wisely Challenge

Time: 15-45 minutes

Equipment:

  • Paper or score cards for each Guide

  • Cards displaying points allocated to each activity

  • Resources needed for the activities, deepening on activities chosen

Instructions:

  1. Set up a large number of different activities utilising different skills around the space (See examples in hint below)

  2. Allocate a different number of points for each activity (e.g. 5 points for activity A, 10 points for activity B etc.)

  3. Guides have a set amount of time (as chosen by leaders) to earn as many points as possible by completing activities of their choice. Hint: Really hype it up to get everyone overexcited, competitive, and keen to earn as many points as possible! It makes it more fun & means people don't make as logical choices as they might have otherwise.

  4. Finish with a debrief. Bring out that:

  • This is all about is about “budgeting” their time, and knowing their strengths.

  • Guides who know their strengths will be able to choose activities they are good/quicker at and use these to earn more points more quickly.

Hint: Examples of activities might include:

  • Mazes (5 points)

  • Word Searches (10 points)

  • A list of words to order alphabetically (5 points)

  • Dishes to be washed (15 points)

  • Skipping (5 points)Tying a knots (5 points)
