Promise & Law Resources

Developing these Promise and Law resources was a part of my Olave Baden Powell Award, and the key reason for developing this website. I'm very thankful to all the units and leaders who helped out by testing the activities or lending me their Guides to test things on - these lovely people are acknowledged at the bottom of the page.

Activities are listed separately and have 3 types of tags to help you find what you are looking for.  Recuit/Guide tags indicate if the activity is suited to members who have recently joined or Guides who have already made their promise.  Age tags indicate the developmental stages I had in mind as suitable for the activity (including OP standing for lave Program).  And finally Individual/Patrol/Unit tags indicate the size group that the activity can work with.  Click on the tags to filter activities.

Law Pick Up Sticks

Time: 5-15 minutes

Equipment:

  • 1 set of 7 sticks for each player with the Guide Laws written on them

Idea: Use chopsticks or sticks collected from the park. Paint them different colours for each law & make sure to write the laws on them.

Instructions:

  1. All the sets of chopsticks are shuffled tougher and held vertically in a clump and left to drop

  2. Taking turns, Guides must pick up one chopsticks at a time without moving any of the sticks except the one they are picking up. Honesty and group consensus will decide if the other sticks have moved.

  3. If they succeed, they keep the stick. The aim is to collect a stick for each of the laws. Guides shouldn’t pick up sticks they don’t need.

  4. If a guide has a stick they have won, they can use it to help pick up their next sticks.

  5. Guides may like to play that if a stick is picked up successfully, that person gets another turn.

  6. Wildcard sticks may be included, which are a different colour, and can count for any law that is needed.
